G is for Grass: Letter G Craft

Help children grow their letter recognition skills by transforming the letter G into a patch of green grass. This fun G is for grass craft will help children learn about the letter G in a creative and hands-on way with a nature inspired twist. Whether you use real grass or green paper, it's a great way to connect teaching literacy with the world around us.

I've also included a free printable letter G template you can use to make this craft even easier for young children. This is a great activity to incorporate into your letter of the week learning for the letter G, or nature units, either at home or in the classroom.

This letter G craft not only reinforces the letter formation of the capital letter G, it also helps to introduce the hard /g/ phonetic sound of letter G by turning the G into grass. G is for grass, g... g... grass. The craft is also a hands on way for children to develop fine motor skills and hand/eye co-ordination whilst cutting and gluing the paper onto the G.

If you want to save time, instead of making the grass from green paper you can use green Easter grass and just cut it into shorter strips. You could also use real grass if you have some available, however please note some children can have grass allergies and real grass will eventually brown over time.

HOW TO MAKE A LETTER G GRASS CRAFT

If you're doing this craft with younger children, or a group of children in a class situation, it may be easier to pre-cut the letter G template and grass pieces so children just need to assemble the craft.

1. Print off the letter G template onto a piece of green paper. You could also use cardstock if you prefer.

2. Cut out the letter G. Younger children may need help with this step if they don't have well developed scissor skills.

3. Glue the letter G into the centre of the brown piece of paper.

4. Cut 1 sheet of green paper into approximately 1cm wide strips. You can do this with scissors, a paper trimmer, or by running the paper through a shredder. Then cut the long strips into shorter lengths so they look like blades of grass.

We cut up our grass pieces using a paper shredder so it made them about half a cm wide and automatically cut them into small strips as it shredded the paper.

5. Glue individual strips of green paper onto the letter G until it's covered in green strips of paper. Don't worry if children glue them on haphazardly, as even though grass looks even and uniform when it's been mowed, grass blades normally grow at different lengths and in different directions.

When the individual pieces are glued on if children don't completely glue the pieces down flat then the ends may stick up or curl. Again don't worry about this as it just makes it look more realistic the way real grass blades would act.
