E is for Earth: Letter E Craft

This super easy, low prep E is for Earth craft is a creative way to incorporate early literacy concepts, process art and building fine motor skills into one simple craft.  It's a great craft to incorporate into your letter of the week learning for letter E, Earth Day or outer space units, either at home or in the classroom. I've also included a free printable letter E template you can use to make this craft even easier for young children.

E is for Earth letter craft.

E is for Earth

This E is for earth craft is a similar design to our G is for galaxy craft as the finished designs both look like they're floating in space. It's also a good craft to use when celebrating Earth Day as a way to get children thinking about our planet, which can spark conversations about taking care of the Earth and the environment.

Painting the capital letter E to look like the Earth is a great way for children to associate the letter E with a recognisable item that starts with the letter E - the planet Earth. It introduces and reinforces letter recognition and the letter formation of E.

Using cotton balls and pegs to paint is also a fun and creative way to make painting even more engaging for children, while also building their fine motor skills. As they clip the pegs to the cotton balls, and hold the pegs while pressing the cotton ball onto the paper to transfer the paint, they'll be using their pincer grip and building their hand strength.

If you don't have cotton balls at home you can use pom poms instead. You can use watercolour or tempura paint, however if you're doing this craft with younger children I recommend using washable paint in case they get enthusiastic and paint themselves.

HOW TO MAKE A LETTER E EARTH CRAFT

1. Print off letter E template onto white paper. You can use white cardstock if you prefer.

2. Make 2 peg paintbrushes by clipping a cotton ball in to each peg.

3. Dab blue paint onto the letter E template to make the ocean. Children can make the ocean wherever they like on the E, just make sure they leave some white space for the land sections.

Don't worry if they paint over the edge of the letter E as it will be cut out later.

4. Dab green paint onto the letter E until all the remaining white space is covered. Set aside to dry.

5. Cut out the letter E. Younger children who don't have well developed scissor skills may need to help with this step.

6. Glue the letter E onto the black cardstock. Try to glue it in the centre of the page so it looks like the Earth in space.
