G is for Galaxy: Letter G Craft

Looking for a fun and creative way to teach kids about the letter G? Transforming the letter G into a stunning galaxy is the perfect way to combine different painting techniques, learning, and imagination. Whether you're a teacher, parent, or caregiver, this activity is an engaging way to make learning the letter G fun.

I've also included a free printable letter G template you can use to make this craft even easier for young children. This is a great activity to incorporate into your letter of the week learning for the letter G either at home or in the classroom.

This letter G craft not only reinforces the letter formation of G, it also helps to introduce the phonetic sound of letter G by turning the G into a galaxy. G is for galaxy, g... g... galaxy. The craft is also a hands on way for children to develop fine motor skills, hand/eye co-ordination and experience different painting techniques including splatter painting and painting with a brush.

Supplies Needed:

We used watercolour paints for the background galaxy colour because they blend together well, however if you only have acrylic paints that's ok. We also chose pink and a pale blue because they're common galaxy colours seen in space and they blend nicely to create purple which is also a common galaxy colour. Again you can choose any colours you like - other colours commonly seen in galaxies include yellow, red and orange. You could also use silver glitter paint for the stars instead of white

If you're doing this craft with younger children you may also want to use a splash mat or art smocks. Adding the paint splatter stars can get a little messy if they're overly enthusiastic.

HOW TO MAKE LETTER G GALAXY CRAFT

This craft involves two different painting techniques done on top of each other which require the paint to dry before adding the second layer. If you're doing this craft in a classroom situation I recommend either splitting it up into morning and afternoon sessions, or doing it across multiple days in different art rotations.

1. Print off letter G template onto white paper. Print out enough templates for each child doing the craft.

2. Paint the letter G with watercolour paint. Don't worry if the kids paint outside of the letter G as it's going to be cut out anyway. Set aside until fully dry.

3. Splatter white paint onto the letter G. Once the coloured paint has dried, speckle white paint over the top of it to represent stars. Do this by putting some white paint onto the brush and then flicking the brush bristles with your finger while holding it over the top of the letter G.

Using the brush to lightly splatter the white paint over the top of the letter G galaxy provides a haphazard, textured effect that represents the thousands of stars in the galaxy. Adults may have to do this step if you want to avoid unnecessary mess, or just let the kids go wild. This was my 7yr old's favourite part of the craft.

4. Cut out the letter G. Once all of the paint is dried, cut out the letter G. This is a great chance for children to practice their scissor skills. If you're doing this craft with toddlers, or children who don't have well developed scissor skills, an adult may need to do this step.

5. Glue the letter G onto black background. Glue the letter G onto the centre of the black page.

Each child's letter be unique. Even though we used the same paints and template, my 7yr old's letter G and my letter G turned out very different.
